The flow of information was often slow and error-prone, as many practices did not sufficiently use modern, secure communication solutions such as KIM (Kommunikation im Medizinwesen).
KIM is a uniform standard for the electronic transmission of medical documents and is based on a secure e-mail procedure. This allows medical data such as findings, notifications, invoices, and X-ray images to be exchanged securely between doctors and medical facilities.
In addition, the exchange of information between the pharmacy and the practices often involved sensitive data, such as prescriptions, findings, or treatment plans, which had to be handled securely under strict GDPR.
In general, sensitive patient data or photos are often sent via WhatsApp. This is a significant data protection problem. In addition to the insecure connection and storage on servers outside the EU, the data is stored on private cell phones.
